HOLLAND, Mich.—The City of Holland will have more than Easter to celebrate this weekend.

Saturday, the city will hold a “Turning of the Blades” dedication and open house to celebrate the completion of extensive repairs to the 250-year-old DeZwaan Windmill.  The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the second annual Run of the Mill 5K run/walk.

The $2.1 million restoration project began two years ago when workers found rotted beams while renovating the windmill’s observation deck.  The Michigan Economic Development Commission awarded the city a $375,000 grant to help pay for the work.  Holland City and Holland Township will also contribute another $600,000 over the next six years, in addition to donations collected during a windmill fundraising campaign.

Windmill Island Gardens will be open free of charge on April 19 so all community members can see the windmill in operation and tour the grounds.
