HOLLAND, MI – September 15, 2010, The Tulip Time Festival, in conjunction with the City of Holland Parks Department, will host a “Tulip Bulb Planting Day” on October 16, 2010 at Window on the Waterfront Park, located on 6th Street between Columbia and College Avenues, from 8am-12:30pm.  Rain date will be October 23, 2010, same time and place. Volunteers will be needed in two shifts 8am-10am and 10:30am-12:30pm.

Crane’s In The City Restaurant will provide snacks and beverages for all volunteers from 10am-10:30am and a Michigan State University Extension Master Gardener will also be on hand to provide educational resources and answer general tulip planting questions. Jonker’s Garden will be donating prizes for volunteers.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up online at tuliptime.com by creating a new account under “Volunteer Login” or call Sue Schurman, Volunteer Coordinator at 616.396.4221 x. 108. Dress for the weather and bring gardening gloves if you have them. The Parks Department will supply the necessary tools for planting bulbs.

Each fall the City of Holland plants over 300,000 tulip bulbs throughout downtown Holland, city parks, and Tulip Lanes. Approximately 50,000 of these bulbs are hand planted at Window on the Waterfront Park. The Tulip Time Festival Board and Staff have assisted the Parks Department in planting bulbs for several years. This year we are offering the entire community the opportunity to get more involved in preparing for the 2011 Tulip Time Festival.

Sally Gruppen, Tulip Time Festival Board Chairperson states, “As we’ve talked with individuals and groups in our community over the past few months, we are frequently asked about ways in which they can be more involved with the festival. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a fun and educational way! Our hope is to have this event be a great success the entire community can share, and make it an annual planting day for the Holland community.”

“The Parks Department welcomes the help of the community planting bulbs for the Tulip Time Festival,” comments Shelly DeVries, the City of Holland’s Greenhouse Operator.  “It will be a great moment to see all the volunteers working on the tulip beds at Window on the Waterfront.  We encourage the volunteers to bring their family and friends back in the spring to see the bulbs they planted in full bloom.”
