Tountas elected to lead Ottawa GOP | News
HOLLAND, Mich – When the second decade of the 21st century dawns January 1, the Ottawa County Republicans will sport a new leader for the pivotal 2012 Presidential election. Current Chairman Brad Slagh of Zeeland Township, who chose not to seek re-election, announced the party’s 44-member executive committee has elected Zeeland attorney Adam Tountas as its chair for the next two years.
“The contest for the chairperson position was particularly livelym," Slagh said. "That interest speaks to the values Republicans emphasized in the 2010 election campaign and that were thoroughly embraced throughout Michigan and much of the nation."
Tountas, 32, was elevated from the party’s executive committee to its chairman’s post. With his wife and daughter, Tountas lives in Jenison (Georgetown Township). He holds a juris doctor degree from Wayne State University and an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.
“I am humbled and excited with the trust placed in me during this critical time. Ottawa County Republicans are respected throughout Michigan for the organizational strength they have built through hard work over many decades,” Tountas commented. “Our goal is to build on that strength with outreach to newer county residents, specifically in the Latino and Asian communities, whose commitment to family, hard work, and the sanctity of life is championed by Republicans. We also intend to bridge the gap between our party and the young professionals living in West Michigan."
Among his primary goals are keeping all Republican elected officials knowledgeable of the party’s support and attracting new volunteers to ensure adequate organization for the 2012 election.
“During the 2010 election, Michigan led the nation in returning power to those who will implement proven fiscal policies that reject new debt and focus on creating lasting, private sector jobs for all who want to work,” Tountas said. “In 2012 we intend to finish the job by electing a Republican U.S. Senator from Michigan and rescuing the nation from Barack Obama's disastrous economic policies that have skyrocketed unemployment and ruined millions of families."
