FOUR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVE GRANTS FROM HYP TO IMPROVE LEADERSHIP IN THE AREA
The grants reflect the group's new interest in philanthropy, leaders say.

HOLLAND - The Holland Young Professionals group announced this week it will distribute $10,000 in grants to four local groups during a ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 9.

Each organization will receive a $2,500 check to further the leadership programs they have already started.

Members of HYP chose Latin Americans United for Progress, Greater Ottawa County United Way, Center for Faithful Leadership and Life Services Parent Center.

"It fits with our mission," said Barry Rice, HYP member. "One of our missions is to cultivate leaders in our community."

Last year the group started the HYP Fund, a donor-advised endowed fund, with the assistance of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. HYP wanted to introduce Holland's young professionals to philanthropy so they could carry on the philanthropic tradition that makes West Michigan special.

If the members raised $10,000 to get if off the ground, the foundation promised to match that money so HYP had funds to distribute into the community right away, Rice said. Through a variety of fundraising events, including HYP's annual chili cookoff, the group accomplished its goal.

Then HYP advertised the grants and received about 10 applications from groups in the community. Members voted on those groups and narrowed the recipients to four.

Rice said the grant ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. during HYP's first Unwind event of the fall at Boatwerks, 216 Van Raalte Ave.
