Feel the Zeel: Unbeatens collide on "Sidelines"

ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Battle lines will be drawn in the cozy West Michigan town of Zeeland this Friday night.

HighSchoolSports.net's "13 On Your Sidelines" shines our Game of the Week spotlight on the Zeeland West-Zeeland East matchup.

It is clearly the biggest and best matchup to date in this young rivalry, which the Dux from West lead 4-1. Both teams enter with undefeated records after three double-digit victories to open the season.

The two high schools sit just a couple of hundred yards apart and share a home football stadium. Students commonly go back and forth between the two campuses to take classes making this rivalry more intimate than most others in the entire state.

"It's a rivalry game but we're not going to over-promote it," said third-year East coach Derek Pennington. "It's one football game. We're going to do the same things we've been doing the first three weeks. I think sometimes when you start telling kids how big a game it is...they (already) know that. We're just trying to focus on what we do."

Zeeland West coach John Shillito recorded his 200th career win last Friday with a win over Byron Center. He says his team will have to be sharp to beat the Chix for the second year in a row.

"Our kids are pretty level-headed," Shillito says. "We're getting ready to play a game and we know they're a terrific offensive football team and a pretty darned good defensive football team so we have to do a lot to get ready."
